TRINITY (TWENTY)

They both laughed after she was done with what Akweley thought was a speech. Akweley poured the alcohol into the cup and handed it over to her. She gulped it down and took in a deep breath. Adjeley knew that she had to calm down so she closed her eyes for few seconds, opened them and looked at Akweley and smiled.

Before she could say anything else, Akweley began to tell her about all what she had been through. It all summed up to her being very lonely. She knew somehow that Adjeley may not understand her for she thought that she had everything figured out.

‘Life is meaningless if you have everything and yet you do not have anybody to share it with and of course a mother to remind you of that every chance she gets’

Akweley closed her eyes and continued ‘the warmth of man’s body wrapped you, the sound of hearing how he appreciates, loves and cares for you…but all the men I have met so far have disappointed me and though I feel the need to be alone at times I still can’t help it..I need love!’

 Akweley added almost too loud.

Adjeley shook her head. She didn’t want to believe that Akweley lacked anything at all. Everything seemed fine and her statement now baffled her for she had always wanted to be like her and as hard as she tried, like steps, whenever she took one step, Akweley would be three steps ahead of her.

Hearing this however didn’t make her feel any better. What Adoley had said about her was the truth. She was envious and was still not convinced because like Akweley, there were many women out there who had power and money but they were not complaining or so she thought.

Adoley joined them after a while. She was still beaming with smiles. They bombarded her with questions and she laughingly dismissed the questions and changed the subject. She began to talk about how hungry she was getting and asked if they should order snacks. Adjeley was becoming impatient and asked her to at least tell them his name. She did that with excitement in her voice. She told them

‘His name is Michael and he is an engineer….he came back from the united states a few weeks ago and he is funny…I like him’

When she was done, Adjeley asked again ‘Is that all?...you were laughing the whole time…what did he say that was so hilarious?’

Adoley took in a deep breath then said ‘Like I said he is a funny guy….I don’t remember all what he said but he told me this serious but very funny joke about the plane crash that happened just this year.’

They both gave her the look that meant that they wanted to hear it too. So she continued ‘well he said that….another way of crossing the road in Ghana. Look left, look right, look left again and look up maybe there was a plane about to land.’

They all laughed. It was indeed funny but then again they thought that other people would not find it so considering the fact that about ten people died. They soon ordered for lunch. When they were done eating, Akweley asked if they could go back home.

A few minutes after they left however, Mrs. Tetteh called and asked her to come home immediately. She began to explain that she had company but the line was already dead. Her mother was going to be really shocked when she sees them in her house.

Akweley drove them straight to her mother’s house. She honked a few times before the gateman opened up for them. He expressed his apologies and blamed it on Mansa who had kept him indoors with the intention of giving him food. Of course Akweley didn’t wait to hear all that. She drove past him and parked. They all got out and Mr. Tetteh came out to meet them.

He smiled and shook both women and welcomed them to his house. He then led them inside and offered them a seat. He went inside to inform his wife that Akweley was in. At first he wanted her to be surprised like he was but on second thought he decided to tell her himself. He told her

‘Just so you know….Adoley and Adjeley came with your daughter…you do remember that they are her best friends right? Be nice’ he added
