TRINITY (SIXTEEN)

Adjeley loved to talk about everything so it was unusual that she was behaving like this. She closed her eyes and still wouldn’t sleep. She sat on the bed and looked at her friend who laid still.
Somehow she knew Adjeley would tell her everything when she was ready. She just needed to gather her thoughts so she wouldn’t bug her.Adoley’s room was opposite Akweley’s master bedroom. She had heard Akweley ask Adjeley to come into her room.

She couldn’t sleep as well. She turned thirty-two a few months back. And even though she had accomplished her desire of becoming a well-known beautician, she had nobody, or that was what she told people. Her father had pushed her away and as her mother had died from cancer, she considered herself as being an orphan.
She didn’t have children of her own and she had pushed all the men who wanted her away by being a tom boy. The truth was that she was afraid to end up like her mother who was never treated well by her father and since she didn’t want to go through that she had refused all her suitors thinking she was better off alone.

Adoley had however dated a few men because she wanted to have fun but broke it off whenever she felt the relationship was becoming too intense. Her actions now tortured her as she had been branded by some people as a lesbian. Her way of dressing and talking and how she treated men in general had been the reason.
Some other women had gone ahead to ask her out and she felt disgusted. There was no way she was going to involve herself in that act she had thought to herself. The reason why she also needed a break was the fact that people had started to point accusing fingers at her and she felt embarrassed.
Adoley didn’t want the false news about her to spread any longer so moving away from the area for a while was her best option. She didn’t want to tell them because she felt there was no need to but it was eating her up and though She tried to force herself to sleep, it was to no avail.

She got up from the bed and went to the bathroom. She pulled a towel and dipped it into a bucket of water which she used to clean her face, neck ,arms and armpit and went back to bed again but still couldn’t sleep. She got up and went out of the room.

She stood by Akweley’s door for a minute and turned to leave, but changed her mind and went back to knock. Akweley asked her in and she crawled on the bed and laid in-between them. Her bed was big enough and when Adoley laid down, Adjeley turned to look at her and smiled. Akweley shook her head as she thought that Adjeley had been able to fall asleep.

‘’I hope I didn’t wake you up’’ Adoley said to her and noticed that she had tears in her eyes so she turned to Akweley and asked

‘’why is Adjeley crying…What did you say to her?’
Akweley shrugged indicating that she didn’t know anything about it the three women sat on the bed and she arranged the pillow on the bed to make them feel comfortable. There was not much to say as they have been chatting all evening.

As they sat there Akweley thought about her plight. She had let go of the man she truly loved for fear that he may not return which would break her heart. She began to think if she had done the right thing for the first time.

Adjeley broke the silence amidst tears and sobs. She told them how her husband treated her over the years. Akweley and Adoley were shocked to the bone. Akweley got up from the bed. This is what she had hated most, men who beat their wives.
Adoley had heard stories of such incidence on television but not from somebody close to her. She devised a plan in her mind on how to get back at the wife beater. Adjeley was crying uncontrollably so both girls hugged her tight. After her cries dyed down, Adoley also broke the silence with her problem bluntly

‘’I have been branded a lesbian because I don’t entertain men’’
They broke away from her and look at each other’s face. Adjeley forgot about her problem instantly. Akweley knew that Adoley was a tom boy but that was not enough reason for people to think of her as a lesbian.

‘’Do I look like a lesbian’’ Adoley asked rather calmly.

‘’How the hell are we supposed to know that?’’ Adjeley blurted out as her lips could never be bottomed.

‘’You twerp!!...at least I don’t allow any man to beat me up like I’m nothing"!! Adoley growled
